Hidden Beneath: Exploring the Bible's Subconscious

  • Four Thursdays: April 21, 28; May 5, 12
  • 7:00 to 9:00 pm

Modern psychoanalysis has powerfully influenced the way we all think about the stories we tell and believe. We ask, “What is behind that?” or “What is the real story underneath?” We commonly accept the cornerstone of psychoanalytic thinking: the reality of a “shadow side” and “unconscious” aspects of ourselves.

Together, we will wonder in a psychoanalytic mood about familiar stories in the Torah and the Christian New Testament. What may be “behind” or “beneath” them; what is defended against, buried, denied, suppressed; what is erupting inadvertently in the story? We will wonder also about the value of questioning in this manner. Did traditional rabbinic commentary intuit this line of questioning? What is the value of critical historical research into these stories?

Taught by Rev. Dr. John Marboe & Rabbi Alan Shavit-Lonstein. No prior knowledge required.
